A Million Drops of Faith
Photography by Sahid Perez
In 2013, I set out alone, camera in hand, into the heart of the Maha Kumbh Mela, the largest spiritual gathering on Earth, an ancient Hindu pilgrimage held once every 144 years in Allahabad, India. For a week, I lived among millions of pilgrims, wandering monks, and seekers who came to bathe where three sacred rivers meet: the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. During this rare celestial alignment, these rivers are believed to become even more potent for liberation and rebirth.
Over seven days, I wandered through this ephemeral city that rises from dust and devotion, capturing portraits, ritual moments, and timeless exchanges between humans and the sacred river. The resulting images offer an invitation to step into an atmosphere of faith, chaos, and transcendence that defines this monumental event.
For me, this pilgrimage with a camera became a quantum leap in my own spiritual journey, a passage through surrender, humility, and the timeless rhythm of belief.
This series of images preserves fleeting moments within an ocean of devotion. It is a glimpse into ritual, surrender, and human connection on an unimaginable scale. Documenting the Kumbh Mela was not just a photographic journey; it was a profound turning point on my path.
Each frame is a drop in this river of faith, inviting you to feel, reflect, and perhaps discover a piece of yourself within the collective flow.
